Fund raising for the two great Charities,

Adventure Ashram and the Rainbow Trust

Adventure Ashram

The initial aim is for Adventure Ashram to provide a medical and educational care and assistance facility to a remote village community on a Global Enduro route in India. The need for proper medical facilities in these outlying villages is very strongly felt as some of these villages are 30-40 kilometres by road from the nearest hospital and, in such extreme terrain without any transport, in many cases this is 40 kilometres too far. The majority of these villagers are daily-wage earners or farmers with smallholdings who are often unable to afford medical care in their local city. They have, effectively, little or no access to sophisticated medical care because of the costs (in both time and money) of travelling to the nearest hospital. This underlines the need to take healthcare to the people, as many cannot afford to tackle illness until it is too late. The urgent need on the Global Enduro routes is to get help out to the remote villages.  The funds will be used to locate the most needy villages.

The education programme will consist of conducting evening classes for village children to raise awareness about vital and diverse topics such as the environment, watershed management, computer science, social studies, use of pesticides and fertilizers (and their effect on the village environment), self-esteem, first aid, sex and sexuality, HIV/AIDS and career options. Also we feel that a programme including art and music is essential as this is something children in remote villages will never be taught at school.

Rainbow Trust Children's Charity

Rainbow Trust Children's Charity provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. Rainbow Trust's Family Support Workers join the family in their own home and are there to provide practical support. We are contactable 24 hours a day for families in crisis from diagnosis, through treatment and even after bereavement.

This year Rainbow Trust celebrates its 25th anniversary. Founded in 1986, we have now supported thousands of families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. With the help of the families who share their inspirational stories about the difference Rainbow has made to their lives, we have been able to raise our profile and tell more people about the work that we do.

THE CHALLENGE

Driving 2,000 kms across India's Western Ghat Mountain range and crossing the hazardous and diverse terrain of Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in Southern India is not to be taken lightly.

And as if that isn't enough!  How about doing it in a 1950s car.  The 37 horsepower Ambi (like an original Morris Oxford).  Then add elephants and other wildlife that have never read the Highway Code and the most chaotic road system on earth.  And all in a country which most of us have no frame of reference for, and you begin to realise what a challenge this can be.

The Karma Enduro is not for the faint-hearted as it will challenge to the limits participants' awareness, commitment and spirit.  Above all, it is not a race - the challenge is to complete the course in one piece.

The  route includes ascending and descending high mountains, crossing fearfully hot and arid deserts, getting through crowded cities and remote forests.  Just a day or two would be enough but driving these cars in these conditions for two weeks in 90 degree heat is a serious challenge of endurance, hence Karma Enduro. This is a worthy cause so please give what you can
